SONY Press Conference
Keynotes & Impressions

This afternoon at 11:30AM PDT/2:30PM EDT, SONY held their annual press conference, hoping to spark interest in their two current-generation devices and keep interest in their last-generation device. Like Jack Tretton, SONY President of America, said, it was all about the games, but SONY had some nice surprises that surely didn’t disappoint. For one, an updated PSP hardware, the introduction of several high-profile PS3 games, and a very long (and clearly exciting) Metal Gear Solid 4 trailer that was near-simultaneously launched around big announcements from Hideo Kojima and Jack Tretton were breathtaking.

Here’s our breakdown of the big conference:

  • SONY President of America promises “games, games, and more games”.
  • There are more than 140 PSP games coming this year.
  • They showcase SOCOM: Tactical Strike, WipEout Pulse, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow, NBA 08′ Block Party, God of War: Chains of Olympus, Silent Hill: Origins, a mysterious LocoRoco-like game called Patapon, Tiger Woods’ PGA Tour 08, Sonic Rivals 2, The Sims 2: Castaway, SWAT: Target Liberty, Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions, and Castlevania: The Dracula X Chronicles, all arriving for PSP this year.
  • Kaz Hirai announces a new PSP–33% lighter, 19% slimmer, better battery life, faster loading times, and video-out so you can watch your videos and listen to our podcast from your television screen.
  • The new PSP is arriving this September.
  • It will be available in three colors: Piano Black, Ice Silver, and Star Wars Battlefront: Renegade Squadron White.
  • There will be a new PSP Entertainment Pack–loaded with an Ice Silver PSP, one copy of Daxter, a Family Guy collection, and 1 GB memory stick, retailing for $199.99 this September.
  • The Star Wars-special edition PSP will retail for $199.99 in October.
  • Phil Harrison talks about Echochrome, perhaps the most simple game ever shown to man in the 21st century, coming to PSP on UMD and PS3 via the Playstation Network. It’s about a man who walks on different platforms: things such as gameplay, objectives, and storylines will soon be revealed.
  • WipEout HD, SOCOM: Confrontation, Warhawk, and Pain will all be available this year on the Playstation Network and via Blu-Ray.
  • Phil Harrison reveals the new features of Home: The ability to access the PS3 XMB straight from the game using a virtual PSP, an evolution of the “Home Lounge” called “Home Square”, which is in an outside environment, the ability to play games on Blu-Ray or on the PS3 hard-drive straight from Home.
  • SONY unveils a sexy list of third-party comers this year: Rock Band, Guitar Hero 3, Madden NFL, and others, in addition to unveiling that Metal Gear Solid 4 and Haze will be PS3-exclusives. Hideo Kojima, MGS-creator and developer, announces that MGS4 will be his last game and also the last game in the series.
  • Gran Turismo 5: Prologue, Ratchet and Clank Future: Tools of Destruction, and Folklore are all previewed.
  • The big Killzone 2 vid shows again to roaring applause.
