Previewrama :: WipEout Pulse

WipEout has been a very big part of SONY’s history in the past 15 years. Since the first edition of the game hit SONY’s Playstation, fans have rushed to purchase each and every single edition. When WipEout made its way to the PSP in the form of “Pure”, it sold nearly a million copies and became the talk of the town when it allowed for digital distribution of new vehicles and maps for free. This never-before-seen tactic is possibly what helped to launch SONY’s Playstation Store, Microsoft’s XBOX Live Arcade, and Nintendo’s Virtual Console. Studio Liverpool, the developers, have decided to continue the series on the PSP in the form of WipEout Pulse. We couldn’t have been any happier.

While Studio Liverpool refuses to stray far away from the current game’s premise, it will bring new automobiles, new tracks, new music, and perhaps, better graphics. Instead of going all Lumines 2 on us, Studio Liverpool has opted to include two revolutionary features. For one, online multiplayer (in addition to ad-hoc) is finally here. Secondly, players can download any of the 24 music tracks on the game to their memory stick. This allows more connectivity between the player and the user. It’s exactly what SONY originally dreamed of when it came to the PSP.

Luckily, Studio Liverpool likes the PSP a lot. Unlike Polyphony (who we all know scrapped Gran Turismo Mobile to bring out a digital download of Gran Turismo HD on PS3), Studio Liverpool is dedicated to bringing BOTH a PSP sequel to Pure and a PS3 edition of the game. As the PSP goes into its third year on the market, its games like this that will continue to entice the PSP faithful and encourage SONY to do more for its embattled handheld.

Studio Liverpool, nor SONY, have marked any release date for Pulse, but we can imagine its sometime later this year.
