Sonic: R a “mixture of speed and clever level design”

Yahoo! Games is the latest to review Sonic Rivals, but once again, it gets a 7.0 (really a 3.5/5) out of 10. Like most, Yahoo! feels that the game is short (like most other PSP games…), but still compliments SEGA on its multiplayer features and graphics. They are unhappy with the game cards, which has nothing to do with the game, they say. They also prove that the game is really short:

Sonic Rivals feels a little like a mini-game to a bigger game. We expected more content than this. The cards are utterly useless in their attempt to milk replay out of the title, and seemed thrown in at the last minute. Gripes aside, its mixture of speed, clever level design, and gameplay innovation are a sprint in the right direction. Bump the score up half a star if you have a friend around who you’ll be playing this with, because that’s when Sonic Rivals shines brightest. This is easily the best Sonic game in the last year. However, when compared to Shadow, Sonic Riders, and the new 360 title, that’s really not saying much.

Is the game good in only multiplayer mode? My friend & I are Sonic fans, so I’m obviously going to have someone to play multiplayer with. Even so, is Sonic:R worth $40? We’ll see.
