PSPFanboy: “Danger of [Patapon] becoming repetitive”…

Patapon is still a ways off from being released anywhere in the world, but PSPFanboy admits that from what they’ve played, the game has the potential to possibly become repetitive. This was one of the few complaints for LocoRoco, though I completely disagreed with it. Despite PSPFanboy’s comment, they claim that the game gets much ‘deeper’, hoping that more advanced controls in further levels will improve the ‘tactical nature’ of the game. Our recent Patapon impressions revealed that the game is still one of our favorites from what we have seen and clearly begs us to want more.

TGS07: Our Latest Patapon Impressions

Patapon is a colorful side-scrolling rhythmic platformer that will soon make its way to the PSP. If anything, it looks like LocoRoco, but it plays very differently. Simple gameplay and cute, cuddly foreign languages are eliminated here. Rather, this rhythmic game depends on speed and accuracy in gameplay and some witty words from little eyeballs to gain attraction. And from what we can tell after seeing the game at TGS, it indeed looks like a stellar addition to the PSP family so far. (more…)

TGS07: Patapon Gets Vocals, Music

patapon.gif There’s been no release date set for Patapon, but SONY continues to quietly advertise the game in advance of its release. The game, as we’ve come to know, is a rhythmic side-scroller, implementing LocoRoco-like 2D action with small and perhaps enjoyable characters. While it may alienate the most devoted fans of our cuddly LocoRoco thanks to an added element of violence and satire, it may well do justice to the casual gamer. In the latest trailer revealed at TGS, we finally have music and vocals, and a quaint look at the gameplay. It’s obvious that you have to click buttons to fight off these “monsters”/villains who seem to attack you. You can infer for yourself by checking out the trailer here in our VodPod. UPDATE: The wrong video was posted before; it has been replaced and still can be accessed at the link above.

Previewrama2: Patapon

Previewrama2 :: Patapon (PSP)
Release Date :: Late 2007-Mid 2008

When Get Loco was liveblogging SONY’s long, but interesting press conference, we didn’t expect to hear anything of the latest LocoRoco-like game, but fortunately, we did. Patapon can be summed up in a few words: a brawny, 2D side-scrolling RTS that uses rhythm aspects. Though it doesn’t seem like LocoRoco thanks to an increased amount of violence, the game’s non-stop humor and colorful graphics shows that SONY is up to trying new things, and that can only be good. Patapon Gets Deserving Media (Finally)

patapatapon.gif SONY’s unique 2D real-time-strategy wonder, Patapon, uses rhythmic elements as a main part of gameplay. After a brief appearance in an E3 montage during SONY’s press conference, some wondered why this game went unnoticed, considerably because it resembled our fav, LocoRoco, which became a critical darling and spawned a cult following. Our first look showcased two vids to you and we had a positive impression. Now, Patapon is finally getting deserving media from the blogs and gaming sites we’ve come to love hate. GamesRadar named Patapon the winner of the ‘Most Frustrating Tease’ award, saying that it was a cross between LocoRoco’s style and rhythm-based gameplay. Also, Kotaku showed the GameTrailers vid, and quite a few commenter’s remarked it as very LocoRoco-like. Finally, some deserving media for what seems like a deserving game.

First Look: Patapon

patapon.gif

Perhaps we’ll find out more about Patapon soon enough, but the game looks addictive. IGN calls it a “2D Platformer that incorporates rhythm-based elements”. Two gameplay videos show that the game is almost very LocoRoco-like, not in the way of seemingly looking like a copycat, but rather a different take on the side-scroller. It almost seems like Tsutomo Kounu might even be behind it. Using rhythm as an aspect in this game looks to be catchy, as rhythm games like DDR and Guitar Hero have exceeded expectations and sold off of the shelves — considering how popular LocoRoco’s music was, it’s easy to say that SONY might already have a hit on their hands with ‘Patapon’, arriving soon for the PSP. Not yet convinced?

See a nice Patapon gameplay vid here.
See part two of the E3 montage that had better Patapon visuals and music.
View GameSpot’s forum on the whole thing, which has become active in anticipating the game.
